Women’s Fund Gathering: Personal and Political Feminisms: Finding Understandings Amid the Chaos

Location
Cinemapolis
Cinema 3
120 E Green St
Ithaca, NY 14850

It’s a tumultuous time for women in the public domain. While we move forward, using our voices and trying to make a difference in our own worlds and more widely, it can seem that there are endless obstacles, backlashes and attempts break it all apart.

As #MeToo and other developments show, increasingly our personal lives and political spheres overlap. “Feminism” is understood differently by each of us. With so much continuous shifting on the world stage and a desire to balance care for ourselves with use of power for others and sensitivity to difference…how do we keep focus and gain strength?

Need to rejuvenate your sense of how to move forward? Join us for this important and stimulating evening of exploration and conversation.

Our Presenter

ZE

Zillah Eisenstein is a nationally acclaimed speaker and writer, having lived through political and social movements while documenting their trends and shifts. She has weaved a private life in Ithaca with a huge body of work across the globe. Zillah will lead this exploration and share her experiences over time. We will start with an awareness of “feminisms”, not just a one-size-fits-all exclusionary notion. Come ready to think, have your notions challenged, and ready to leave engaged and nourished by some different or deeper understandings.

Community Foundation’s Women’s Fund is proud to host this event as part of our objective to promote educational, economic, social, and political equality for women. We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and “female” and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people who are significantly female-identified.

Zillah Eisenstein is a ground breaking political thinker, writer and activist who is always looking to find new anti-racist feminist pathways. She is the author of more than twelve books and hundreds of articles detailing the continual struggles for social, racial, economic, environmental, gender, sexual, and bodily justice by women of all colors across the globe. She has lived in Ithaca New York throughout these decades of national and global activism. She is Professor Emerita of Political Theory, Ithaca College, NY. Visit her website to access her writings for Al Jazeera and Feminist Wire.
