This year’s celebration will feature a powerful keynote address by Anisah Sabur. Anisah is an activist, organizer, and advocate, building coalitions throughout communities impacted by the criminal legal system. She is a directly impacted woman of color who has held several leadership roles in campaigns to dismantle the criminal legal system in New York State, to address the impact of incarceration on women, and to support impacted women and girls in leadership roles. Anisah has also been instrumental in the fight to pass the HALT Solitary Confinement Act and the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act. Anisah is currently the National Coordinator for the Unlock the Box Campaign, where she provides technical assistance to 23 states working to end solitary confinement in state and federal facilities.
Additionally, GIAC will offer three engaging workshops and community-centered discussions, including:
Know Whence You Came: James Baldwin, the Truth Teller
Centering Community Care: Non-Carceral Responses to Harm
Burning Injustice: Prison Slave Labor & California Firefighting
A light breakfast and luncheon will be provided.
