A Visit to Second Wind Cottages: Where Hope Takes Root

We had the privilege of visiting Second Wind Cottages alongside board members and community friends — and what we experienced was nothing short of inspiring.

Second Wind stands as a beacon of compassion for our community’s most vulnerable — our unhoused population. What makes this place so special is its low-barrier commitment to meeting people where they are, offering not just housing, but dignity, stability, and a chance to begin again…where they can get their ‘second wind’.

Each resident lives in a one-bedroom cottage, complete with a full kitchen and bathroom — a true home of their own. As we walked through the community, we were struck by how warm and welcoming it felt. Some cottages had colorful potted plants and flowers outside, while one resident proudly showed off a beautiful backyard garden bursting with sunflowers. Every touch spoke of care, pride, and the healing that happens when people are given space to grow.

The vision of founder Carmen Guidi is alive in every corner of Second Wind. His dream — to create a community where people can heal and rebuild their lives — continues to guide the work of the incredible staff. Their compassion and commitment to upholding that vision were evident in the dialogue we shared.

They are building a new community space and kitchen, designed to bring residents and neighbors together. The team at Second Wind is eager to welcome community members in — to share meals, host programs, and build relationships that extend beyond the cottages. We learned so much while we were there!

With a new Executive Director stepping in, there’s a sense of fresh energy and hope for the future. Second Wind is turning the page to a new chapter — one rooted in the same belief that has always guided them: that everyone deserves a place to call home and a community to call their own.
