Reflection & Discussion: Our Visit with Kitchen Theatre
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our site visit to Kitchen Theatre Company. It was a truly meaningful gathering, bringing together a mix of executive directors, board members, community friends, and fellow partners who care deeply about storytelling, equity, and the arts in Tompkins County.
We were welcomed by Producing Artistic Director Emily Jackson, whose commitment to community was evident from the moment we walked in. Emily embodies what it means to lead with intention. She is dedicated not only to producing excellent theatre, but to creating a space where everyone—artists, audiences, and neighbors—feels seen, welcomed, and included. Her leadership reflects a deep belief that art is a vehicle for connection and belonging.
Emily came thoughtfully prepared, ready to gather feedback from us. She asked smart, intentional questions that opened up meaningful dialogue about what the Kitchen means to our community and what it can continue to become. Together, we talked about:
Building capacity—both internally and through deeper partnership with the community.
The power of the intimate setting and how it creates unique artistic and audience experiences.
Artist recruitment and retention, and the importance of creating supportive environments for emerging and established artists.
Community value, and how the Kitchen continues to serve not just as a theatre, but as a gathering place and cultural anchor.
We also learned more about their programming and events, which continue to offer diverse, compelling stories and opportunities for engagement. From mainstage productions and new work development to community conversations, education initiatives, and events designed to bring people together, the Kitchen is committed to being a space where art sparks dialogue and builds understanding.
What was clear throughout our visit is that the Kitchen Theatre Company is not just in the community—it is of the community. They show up with generosity, humility, and a true desire to listen and grow alongside the people they serve.
We are grateful for the partnership and for the opportunity to witness firsthand the passion and vision fueling their work!
