Building Community Through Conversation: Unity in Shades Roundtable Recap

Last night, I had the opportunity to attend the Unity in Shades Roundtable, hosted by the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, an event the Community Foundation was proud to sponsor. The roundtable created intentional space for people of color across industries and business sectors to connect, share, and speak honestly about the challenges we face—and the resilience we carry—while navigating professional spaces that are not always built with us in mind.
This session focused on goal setting and self-care, two practices that are often framed as “extras,” but for BIPOC professionals, are frequently the first things sacrificed in the name of survival, responsibility, and showing up for everyone else. The conversation reminded us that rest, clarity, and intentional goal-setting are not luxuries—they are necessary tools for sustainability, leadership, and for us to be able to function as humans.
There is power in simply showing up. Being in community, being part of conversations that matter, and creating space to be seen and heard without explanation is so important. None of us are alone in our experiences and that collective care, community, and shared wisdom are essential.
As a foundation committed to equity, racial justice, and community engagement, it was meaningful to witness and participate in a space that centers our Black and Brown voices and lived experience. Supporting and engaging in conversations like is the best part of my job. Written by Gloria Coicou, Chief Engagement, Equity, & Grants Officer.
