Carrying the Legacy Forward: Honoring Jesse Jackson Through Community, Unity, and Everyday Action

Honoring Jesse Jackson means honoring someone who never forgot the people at the bottom of the ladder, and never let the rest of the country forget them either. For Black and Brown communities, he wasn’t just a national figure on a stage. He was present. He showed up in our neighborhoods, our struggles, our victories, and our grief. He spoke in a way that made people feel seen, worthy, and powerful — even when the world was telling us otherwise.
He carried forward the work of Martin Luther King Jr. but made it clear that the dream required more than speeches. It required access to important things like jobs, capital, education, political power, and dignity. He believed our communities didn’t need saving, we needed investment, opportunity, and a fair shot.
That belief is at the heart of real philanthropy. Not charity that makes people feel small, but investment that recognizes strength, talent, and possibility. Rev. Jackson understood that resources are tools for justice. When used right, they can shift systems, and make real change.
We honor him at the Community Foundation, not by quoting him, but by doing the work. Every time we fight for equitable funding. Every time we make space for voices that don’t usually get heard…every time we open up a seat at the table. Every time we choose collaboration over competition. Every time we bet on communities and organizations that others overlook. That is how his legacy lives on.
For many of us, this is what we do daily. It’s in the relationships we build, the trust we earn and protect, and the doors we try to open a little wider than we found them. It’s in believing that unity isn’t about sameness — it’s about showing up for each other anyway. The most honest way to honor him is simple: keep going. Keep choosing community. Keep choosing courage. Keep choosing each other.
