The Power of Women’s Philanthropy

Every March, during Women’s History Month, we pause to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women—past and present—whose leadership, courage, and vision continue to shape our community. This month offers a special opportunity to reflect on the power of women’s philanthropy and the collective impact that happens when people of all genders come together to invest in equity, opportunity, and wellbeing.

Across history, philanthropy has been influenced by women who recognized the power of community care. Women have organized mutual aid networks, advocated for social justice, and created pathways for others to thrive—even when they themselves were excluded from traditional systems of power and wealth. This is philanthropy. Their legacy reminds us that philanthropy is not only about giving resources… it’s about the end result: a just and compassionate society. We thank and honor those who have come before us.

Here in Tompkins County, that spirit lives on through our remarkable Women’s Fund Advisory Committee. This dedicated group of community leaders works year-round to advance opportunities for women and girls. Their efforts reflect their commitment to strengthening the health, safety, and well-being of women and families, right here. Through thoughtful grantmaking during the Foundation’s annual grant cycle, the Women’s Fund supports programs that uplift women in transformative ways. From advancing women’s rights and reproductive health, to addressing mental health and economic stability, the committee helps ensure that organizations we know and love have the resources they need to support women across every stage of life.

They don’t stop at grants. Education and community engagement are also central to their work. Each year, the committee hosts an educational event that brings together community members, advocates, and leaders to explore issues affecting women locally and beyond. These gatherings create space for dialogue, learning, and collective action—reminding us that lasting change begins with informed and engaged communities. They are such an inspiring bunch!

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we also recognize that honoring women’s contributions cannot be confined to a single month. We remain committed to uplifting women’s voices, supporting women-led initiatives, and investing in programs that expand opportunity year-round. We invite you to join us in celebrating the women who have helped shape Tompkins County and those who continue to lead us forward today. Their stories remind us that when women support women, entire communities grow stronger.
